Stronger H.E.A.R.T., Safer Kids
100 H.E.A.R.T. Members in 2010!

Each year the members of H.E.A.R.T. demonstrate tremendous generosity, creativity and compassion for women and children who have been abused. In the past year, H.E.A.R.T. members helped provide victims with clean clothes and shoes; paid for emergency housing for women fleeing violence in their homes; sent hundreds of foster kids back to school with new backpacks and supplies; guaranteed follow-up counseling for children who were abused and neglected; and created a safe place for children to heal and begin to dream of a future free from violence.

But in the past year, the number of children being seen at the Violence Intervention Program clinics has nearly doubled. We need a stronger, larger H.E.A.R.T. membership to help us protect all of these children and families.

We need 100 H.E.A.R.T. Members in 2010!

The funds raised through annual H.E.A.R.T. memberships are earmarked for direct client services through the Violence Intervention Program. VIP is very proud that 90% of all income goes to direct client programs and services.

Help us reach our goal!

Please join H.E.A.R.T. for 2010 or renew your membership today. If you have made other gifts in the past, this is the time to take the next step and become part of this powerful group of women for what we promise will be an amazing year.

Fashion with HEART

H.E.A.R.T. supporters Elizabeth Wiatt and Jamie Tisch have opened a wonderful new store, Fashionology, for young girls with a penchant for design. The retail boutique turns the design process over to the child and allows them to test the limits of their imaginations and bring their dreams to life. Recently, Elizabeth, Jamie and H.E.A.R.T. Board member Alison Petrocelli put that passion for making dreams come true to work for H.E.A.R.T., and hosted an in-store fundraiser on November 19.

Dozens of enthusiastic mothers and daughters filled the boutique to make their own one-of-a-kind clothing. The store donated a portion of the afternoon’s proceeds to H.E.A.R.T. as well as put together special gift bags with clothes and stuffed animals that guests could buy and have given to a girl in need during the holiday season. H.E.A.R.T. Board member and actress Shiva Rose and her daughter Collette McDermott were on hand as were other H.E.A.R.T. board members, supporters and friends like Linda Rubin, Gillian Wynn, Gelila Puck, Jamie, and Elizabeth and her daughter.

"Fashionology is proud to support H.E.A.R.T. and the incredible work they do with young victims in our community," said Elizabeth. "One of our missions is to empower young girls and our commitment to H.E.A.R.T. allows us to be a small part of their work in healing."

The color and energy inside Fashionology was the perfect backdrop for an event intended to build up resources and support for girls who have been so tortured that they stop believing in their own future or their own self-worth.

"Elizabeth and Jamie have been H.E.A.R.T. supporters for many years and when we first discussed having an event at their store we knew it would be especially fitting at this time of year," shared Alison. "The gift bags the store is selling will be so welcome by moms who may have no other gift to give their little girl. And the money we raised will help H.E.A.R.T. provide so many children and families with those little extras that can make it a happy holiday season."

H.E.A.R.T. was founded in 2003 to provide those things that traditional sources of funding will not cover, like clean clothes and underwear for sexual assault victims who have to surrender their torn, tattered garments as evidence. H.E.A.R.T. also makes sure that every child who comes into the VIP clinic to be examined for physical or sexual assault is given a stuffed animal. That’s around 8,000 stuffed animals each year. Doctors and nurses report that this simple item is incredibly powerful. It gives frightened children something to hold onto, a comforting presence with whom to be sad, mad, happy, angry or scared.

VIP and the women of H.E.A.R.T. are incredibly grateful to Alison, Elizabeth and Jamie and the team at Fashionology for opening the store and their hearts to so many children and organizing such a successful event.

Noah's Ark Sets Sail for H.E.A.R.T.

It was a case of contagious inspiration.

Young Noah Somer, son of H.E.A.R.T. Member Annika Somer, was searching for a way to be of service to other children. His mom had just read how fellow H.E.A.R.T. Member Corie Tappin rallied a group of friends to donate to the organization. Drawing on Corie's example, mother and son came up with a plan and set out to launch "Noah's Ark."

It was simple but oh so successful.

Earlier this month, Noah invited friends and family to a party. No j0315479special occasion. But he asked each of them to bring at least one new stuffed animal that he could give to children who have been abused. Dr. Heger went along for the journey, and when it was all done, Noah and Annika were able to deliver 145 stuffed animals to H.E.A.R.T.

More and more child victims and foster children are coming to VIP for services. If you feel like you are coming down with a case of inspiration for H.E.A.R.T. here are a few things you could do:

  • Ask friends and family to buy stuffed animals for the clinic instead of birthday presents for you.
  • Organize a Children's New Book Drive with members of your gym, office, place of worship, etc. We'll give the books to foster kids who do not have many things to call their own.
  • Collect used toys, puzzles, games from your house and your neighbors that we can use in the waiting rooms at the clinics and for therapy.
Thanks, Noah!

VIP Back to School Day

On Wednesday, September 2 VIP is hosting a very special Back-to-School Day for all of our child and teen clients. That afternoon we will turn VIP into a one-stop shop for all their school supplies and we could use H.E.A.R.T.'s help!

back_to_school_2You can’t build bridges, write poetry, or uncover the mysteries of the physical world without the proper tools. And so many of the children who come to VIP are without those tools. Every day more and more families tell us that because of lay offs, medical bills, and astronomical rents they are having trouble just putting food on the table. They have no idea how they will be able to get their children backpacks, lunch boxes, pencils, pens, notebooks, paper, crayons, calculators, and everything else that the schools will require them to have but not provide for them.

You can help by:

  • Making a financial contribution to VIP to be used to buy supplies
  • Purchasing an extra set (or two) of the same supplies you buy for your children and sending them to VIP
  • Shopping VIP’s Wish List at Target.com. We will keep the list updated with everything we know the kids need and you can purchase online and have them shipped right to the office.
Supply List

VIP has several hundred children and teens in ongoing services so we need your help making sure we have enough supplies for everyone. We will need:

  • Backpacks and lunch boxes for children 5-18
  • Pencils, Pens, Highlighters, Erasers, Markers
  • Crayons and Colored Pencils
  • Rulers, Child Safety Scissors, Glue Sticks
  • Lined Paper and Graph Paper
  • 3-ring notebooks, spiral notebooks/composition books/journals
  • Pocket Calendars/Organizers/Calculators
  • Target Gift cards for school uniforms and gym clothes
  • Much more….

Mark Your Calendars and Join the Fun

Back-to-School Day will require all hands on deck – a host of volunteers to help us make sure every child gets through the assembly line of backpacks, notebooks, clothes, and more in a fun and efficient manner. If you would like to join in and volunteer that day, please let us know by sending an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or calling 323-226-2097. The event will run from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. You can participate for any portion of that time or help with set-up or clean-up before or after. Thanks for lending a hand!
